Conficker is a dangerous worm that allows attackers to remotely control your computer. The latest Windows security updates keep Conficker away, but if your computer was already infected before performing Windows update process, you will not be able to access Microsoft or security websites to remove the worm. It could be hard to believe, but after the recent release of Firefox 3.5.1 update, a new security flaw that allows remote code execution through JavaScript code was discovered. A proof of concept for the exploit code was also made public and it works, because Mozilla Firefox browser is still vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow. The attacker could generate the buffer overflow by sending long Unicode strings to the document.write method and in this way is possible the remote code execution to compromise an operating system or a DOS (Denial Of Service) attack.

One year ago, in the article “A New Powerful Virus Could Affect Millions of WordPress Blogs“, there was underlined the necessity of performing updates of WordPress sites, especially when critical security issues are fixed in the current software release. The latest version (2.8.2) of the popular blogging platform WordPress was just launched and is ready for free download. WordPress 2.8.2 patches an XSS security vulnerability: due to the fact that the author’s comment URLs were not fully sanitized in version 2.8.1, an attacker could used this security leak in order to redirect you from the administration area to another website.

As reported by the Milw0rm website, Firefox 3.5 has one big security vulnerability (entitled Firefox 3.5 Heap Spray Vulnerabilty) which exists in Tracemonkey, the new JavaScript rendering engine developed by Mozilla. The instructions for hackers regarding how to use the Firefox 3.5 security flaw can be found already online, therefore an attacker is able to take total control of any computer running Firefox 3.5 through remote code execution techniques, because a patch is not yet available. Mozilla has confirmed the existence of the Firefox browser vulnerability in the way in which JavaScript is handled by Tracemonkey engine.

On July 06, 2009, Microsoft has made public the existence of a severe security flaw in Internet Explorer, caused by a vulnerability discovered in Microsoft Video ActiveX Control. As a consequence, if any attacker succeeds in exploiting this security leak of Internet Explorer browser, then the user computer could be remotely controlled by the attacker, with the same access rights over the machine resources and data, as the ones corresponding to the owner.
