Last week, a few themes for the upcoming Firefox 3.7 browser were unveiled on MozillaWiki. But what’s next? The first published screenshots which show the design of the Firefox 4.0 browser does not need to be commented. Firefox 4.0 graphical user interface could have surprises, at least for Windows users. The Firefox 4.0 designs proposed on Mozilla Wiki for “ brainstorming / exploration only”, introduce you to the future of web browsing based on Firefox: tabs-on-bottom version is similar with the one proposed for Firefox 3.7, while tabs-on-top design is approximately the same as Chrome browser GUI. Through the newly released Jetpack 0.4, Firefox 3.5.1 users will be able to record audio directly in the web browser. Initially made for the simplification of Firefox add-ons development, Jetpack 0.4 comes with two new features: Audio Recording APIs and Page Mods APIs. Based on the audio encoding APIs, developers will be able to create add-ons which allows users to record high-quality audio in Ogg-Vorbis file format, directly from within the browser. The files can then be played back easily with new audio tag support introduced since Firefox 3.5.

Web browsers will always have security flaws, especially due to the possibility of the remote code execution through JavaScript routines. In case of the recently released Firefox 3.5 browser, the highly critical security flaw was solved in the updated version (Firefox 3.5.1) launched on July 16, 2009 by Mozilla. Alongside the severe security issue reported by Secunia and other similar sites, in this new Firefox release, additional security and stability related problems were also patched.

Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 developers already have introduced the multiprocess browsing feature into these browsers. Even Mozilla developers have been talking about the separation of web applications in different tabs as multiple processes, before the introduction of this feature in Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8, the latest version of Firefox (Firefox 3.5) does not render web pages with different CPU threads (as multiple processes). Now, the newly deployed Mozilla project, entitled Electrolysis, has the role to bring multiprocess browsing capabilities to Firefox.

Finally, Mozilla Firefox 3.5 was launched and is available for free download. It comes with an interesting set of major new features, as well as improvements of overall speed of response and stability. For example, it is capable to play natively (without the need of a plugin) video encoded in Ogg Theora format and Ogg Vorbis audio due to the included support for HTML 5 technology. On the other hand, the JavaScript execution speed is faster than in previous Firefox versions.

Last year, the release of Firefox 3.0 milestone was marked by the unpleasant discovery of a critical security flaw with high severity, only in a few hours after the browser was launched, which put in danger over ten of million of computers. Now, the new Firefox 3.5 stable version will be released on Tuesday morning (June 30, 2009), according to PC Magazine. There is also expected that the total number of Firefox downloads to surpass 1 billion with the official launching of Firefox 3.5.

Two new development versions of Fennec mobile browser (based on Mozilla engine) were just announced to be available for free download. Fennec is the mobile version of the Firefox browser, currently compatible only with Windows Mobile 6 operating system and OS2008 (”Maemo”) software platforms, running on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. The new releases of Fennec are intended only for testing: Fennec1.0 Beta (Maemo) and Fennec 1.0 Alpha 2 (Windows Mobile).
