Microsoft Research Machine Translation team has just announce the availability of Microsoft Translator, a free web based translation service, also branded as Live Search Translator. It offers similar features to Google Translate service, by taking any text contained in HTML elements and providing the corresponding automatic translation into one of twelve different languages, such as Japanese, Korean, Polish, Chinese and others.

A team of researchers from Microsoft has published a paper called “The Multi-Principal OS Construction of the Gazelle Web Browser”, in which there is described the model of a new browser prototype, as well as the testing results. The browser is called Gazelle and is conceived as a multi-principal OS (a principal is the equivalent of a website) – the most secure web browser ever built until now, with its own Kernel, an operating system that manages the protection of resources in an exclusive manner.

Google has just released Google Toolbar 6 Beta for Internet Explorer. Google Toolbar 6 Beta is meant to improve the user search and browsing experience by providing useful features, like support for Google Gadgets (like Gmail gadget for example) with custom buttons which makes them available independently of the website you are browsing, access to the most visited websites only by opening a new tab, automatic translation tools and more. An interesting addition in this version is the Quick Search Box, a new web search functionality that also gives the possibility to run applications or find files on the local computer.

Apple has released the beta 4 public version of the Safari web browser for Windows (XP or Vista) and Mac OS X. It includes a total of 150 features, but from the new ones, an interesting addition as compared with the previous Safari version is represented by the Nitro JavaScript engine, which will provide a faster access to pages during web browsing: the JavaScript execution is performed up to six times faster than in case of Internet Explorer 8, respectively up to four times faster that Firefox 3.1, according to iBench and SunSpider performance tests results. The Acid 3 Test shows a score of 100/100.

Id Software, Inc., the developer of the the well known games Wolfenstein, DOOM, QUAKE and Enemy Territory, has just made available for public the new web browser based game QUAKE LIVE, as open beta. The game can be played free of charge directly in a web browser, on computers having Windows XP or Vista operating systems and Internet Explorer 7, FireFox 2.0 or higher installed, only with the help of an ActiveX plugin which ensures the automatic update of the game files on client side, without the need of supplementary downloads and installation of patches or updates.
