It could be hard to believe, but after the recent release of Firefox 3.5.1 update, a new security flaw that allows remote code execution through JavaScript code was discovered. A proof of concept for the exploit code was also made public and it works, because Mozilla Firefox browser is still vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow. The attacker could generate the buffer overflow by sending long Unicode strings to the document.write method and in this way is possible the remote code execution to compromise an operating system or a DOS (Denial Of Service) attack.

Through the newly released Jetpack 0.4, Firefox 3.5.1 users will be able to record audio directly in the web browser. Initially made for the simplification of Firefox add-ons development, Jetpack 0.4 comes with two new features: Audio Recording APIs and Page Mods APIs. Based on the audio encoding APIs, developers will be able to create add-ons which allows users to record high-quality audio in Ogg-Vorbis file format, directly from within the browser. The files can then be played back easily with new audio tag support introduced since Firefox 3.5.

Despite of Acid 3 Test proofs for the “possible” performances of the most commonly used web browsers, like Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari or Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera 10 Beta 2 browser seems to deliver a better user experience on older computers, having a CPU working at frequency of only 1 GB. The pages rendering speed is almost instantaneous, disregarding the quantity of CSS, JavaScript or the number of server side executed functions.

Concerning browser security updates, Google Chrome silent update could be the safest, as compared to Mozilla, Microsoft, Opera and Apple technology, because it does not require user interaction and cannot be disabled from within the graphical user interface. Google Chrome silent update is automatically set to run every five hours, even if the browser is not running. Now, Google has made notable improvement to the silent update mechanism through the addition of a new differential compression algorithm called Courgette, which determines the process to be faster and to consume less bandwidth. For example, in case of the latest Google chrome developer channel, the size of the pushed data through Courgette is very low (just 78,848 bytes).

Web browsers will always have security flaws, especially due to the possibility of the remote code execution through JavaScript routines. In case of the recently released Firefox 3.5 browser, the highly critical security flaw was solved in the updated version (Firefox 3.5.1) launched on July 16, 2009 by Mozilla. Alongside the severe security issue reported by Secunia and other similar sites, in this new Firefox release, additional security and stability related problems were also patched.

As reported by the Milw0rm website, Firefox 3.5 has one big security vulnerability (entitled Firefox 3.5 Heap Spray Vulnerabilty) which exists in Tracemonkey, the new JavaScript rendering engine developed by Mozilla. The instructions for hackers regarding how to use the Firefox 3.5 security flaw can be found already online, therefore an attacker is able to take total control of any computer running Firefox 3.5 through remote code execution techniques, because a patch is not yet available. Mozilla has confirmed the existence of the Firefox browser vulnerability in the way in which JavaScript is handled by Tracemonkey engine.
