This script converts a ySearch.org Y chromosome STR haplotype comparison table to a Fluxus Network Y-STR data (.ych) input file. The free Fluxus Network software generates median-joining networks which can be used for the phylogenetic analysis of a set of DNA haplotypes. ySearch is a free public database where people can post Y chromosome STR haplotypes, and the associated surnames, origin localities, and general family histories including GEDCOM files, and then compare these haplotypes with others in the database to find matches. Comparison with closely related haplotypes can help people find related male lineages, and the ethnic origin of the male line. (which contains the Northwest Irish Modal haplotype M5UKQ) This paper "The Genetic Legacy of the Mongols" used median-joining networks to prove that Genghis Khan was the direct patrilineal ancestor of over 8% of the population of Asia, and 1 out of 200 men on earth. Here is a search in the ySearch database for haplotypes matching that of Genghis Khan's deduced haplotype: Search for haplotypes matching ID PVU76 at a genetic distance of 3 Due to a limitation of 1 KB per haplotype in Fluxus Network, STRs are not named but numbered sequentially by column in the dataset. Fluxus Network is also currently limited to haplotypes with no more than 96 STRs.
